Gerard Patalano is a Zumba instructor, events DJ, and CrossFit enthusiast who lives in NY with his wife and kids.

Gerard began his fitness journey 6 years ago weighing 184lbs at 5’4″. He had been a Zumba instructor and realized he was in terrible shape. While DJing in a CrossFit gym for a competition, he saw the vibe, the energy, and the level of fitness, and knew he had to start.

Gerard joined Christian Harris (CrossFit Games athlete) program and started his journey into CrossFit.

No way back.

Building a CrossFit Home Gym

Gerard gradually built up his garage gym with the CrossFit basic items: a wall-mounted Pull-up Bar, Rogue Bar 2.0 and some hi-temp Rogue bumper plates.

When COVID-19 hit, Gerard’s gym membership was canceled, and he fully dove into the garage gym way of life. He joined CrossFit champ Matt Fraser‘s HWPO program and still uses it and loves it.

“HWPO is an absolutely incredible program. 100% thought out. Catered to everybody. Communication with HWPO staff is by far the best. They have elite coaches from every way of training. Weightlifting, strongman, CrossFit…”

Gerard

His oldest son (now 6) started working out with him, and he finds motivation in knowing that his kids are set up for their future and to live a healthy lifestyle.

“Every day my son comes off the bus, knocks on the garage door and starts his workout with me.”

Challenges and Advice

The only challenge faced with building a garage gym is the cost.

Gerard advises not to buy impulsively and not to buy what everyone is using.

Focus on how you want to workout, your program, and buy what you need for YOU.

What’s next for Gerard?

As he looks to the future, he plans to expand his gym by acquiring a shed for his non-gym side of the garage and fully transforming the rest of the garage into a complete gym.

Regarding equipment, Gerard believes that he has everything he needs, but he would like to add a TrueForm type runner to his collection eventually. Additionally, he would love to build himself an Olympic Weightlifting platform to enable him to perform specific exercises better.
